Russian State Academic Drama Theatre named after Fedor Volkov in Yaroslavl is the first professional theatre in Russia, established in 1750. The theatre was named after its founder – the son of a merchant, Fedor Volkov, a director, an actor, a painter and an entrepreneur. Starting with a warehouse on the bank of Volga and amateur actors, Fedor Volkov brought the theatre to a professional level and was invited to Saint Petersburg to develop theatre business. In the 19th century the Yaroslavl theatre was famous not only for being the oldest Russian theatre, but also as one of the best theatres in the country. On this stage such famous actors as Shchepkin, Strepetova, Moskvin, Kachalov, Savina, Stanislavsky performed. Every year the theatre participates in international festivals and contests, it has many awards, including the most prestigious Russian theatrical prize “Golden Mask”, Stanislavsky Award “For Achievements in Development of Performing Art and Theatre Business in Russia”. Annually the Volkov Theatre organizes two large festivals: International Volkov Festival with a motto “Russian Drama in the Languages of the World”, which became one of five top theatre festivals of the country, and the Youth Festival “Future of Theatrical Russia”.
