Tourist Attractions

Monastery of Our Savior Transfiguration is one of the main symbols of Yaroslavl. This is the most ancient architectural attraction of the city; the Monastery was founded in the 12th century by Prince Konstantin Vsevolodovich. In 1550-1580 the monastery became a stronghold, where the state treasury was kept and the troops of streltsy stood. During the Time of Troubles, when the troops of Minin and Pozharsky set up a camp in the city, Yaroslavl for four months has become the capital of the Russian state. In the monastery the interim government was placed and a special currency, a Yaroslavl kopeck, was mint. Nowadays the Yaroslavl State Historical, Architectural and Art Museum-Reserve is located in the Monastery of Our Savior Transfiguration; the museum is regarded the main museum of the Yaroslavl Region.
